What Is Jaw Pain?

Whether you’re experiencing TMJ pain for the first time or have been managing chronic discomfort for a while, this guide offers valuable insights and practical strategies to help relieve your jaw pain and enhance your daily well-being.

Jaw pain can stem from a variety of issues and injuries. Understanding these common problems can help you recognise the causes of your pain and seek appropriate treatment.

The most common issue is due to TMJ issues:

TMJ Disorders: TMJ disorders encompass a range of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint, which connects the jawbone to the skull. These disorders can arise from various factors, including jaw misalignment, arthritis, teeth grinding (bruxism), or trauma to the jaw. Symptoms may include jaw pain or tenderness, difficulty chewing or opening the mouth fully, clicking or popping noises when moving the jaw, and headaches.

Other Factors

Understanding the causes of jaw pain is crucial for finding effective treatment and relief. Lower back pain can be categorised into two types: acute and chronic. Let’s explore these types and the common causes of lower back pain.

Acute jaw pain, such as the sudden onset of jaw tension, can develop rapidly and often feels sharp and intense. However, with proper care and treatment, it usually resolves within a short period. This type of pain is often triggered by specific events or injuries, such as sleeping in an awkward position, or sudden movements that strain the jaw muscles.

Chronic jaw pain persists for 12 weeks or more, even after the initial cause has been addressed. This type of pain can vary in intensity, and may be constant or come and go. Factors like long-term teeth grinding, or stress can contribute to its persistence. Effective treatment often requires a comprehensive approach, focusing not only on relieving physical symptoms but also on addressing underlying issues and contributing factors.
