Welcome to the Reformer

Reformer Pilates is where movement meets mindfulness: a dynamic, full-body workout using specialised equipment known as the Reformer.

Each Reformer features a smooth, sliding carriage with adjustable springs and pulleys that create resistance, allowing you to move with control and precision.

The result? A low-impact, deeply strengthening workout that builds tone, balance, and awareness in equal measure.

Our Approach

At Pivot Therapies, we teach APPI Clinical Pilates on the Reformer, which means every class focuses on quality of movement rather than quantity of reps.

You’ll be guided through each exercise with care, attention, and expert instruction, helping you move efficiently, safely, and with confidence.

Laying the Foundations

To make the most of your Reformer practice, a strong foundation in Matwork Pilates is essential. Matwork helps you connect with your core, learn alignment, and understand the key principles that make Reformer so effective.

That’s why all new clients begin with our 6-week Reformer: Foundations Course, a supportive journey designed to help you understand the equipment, build confidence, and discover just how incredible your body can feel when it moves well.

Why Our Introduction Course Matters

Starting something new can feel a little daunting, especially when it involves springs, straps, and a moving carriage. That’s why every journey with Reformer Pilates at Pivot begins with our 6-week Reformer: Foundations Course.

This isn’t a gentle introduction, it’s a carefully structured, progressive course designed to challenge you safely and effectively. You’ll still work hard, but every movement is tailored to you, allowing us to see how your body moves, where to progress you, and how to build your strength and control week by week.

Over six weeks, you’ll get to know the Reformer, how it moves, how to adjust it for your body, and how to use it with confidence. You’ll learn to connect your breath and core to movement, develop control through resistance, and build a solid foundation that prepares you for the full class timetable.

If you’ve already joined us for Matwork, you’ll recognise familiar principles, posture, control, precision, but with the added challenge of a moving carriage and adjustable springs. And if you’re new to Pilates, don’t worry, we’ll guide you every step of the way, helping you discover your strength, balance, and potential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, as long as you’ve completed our Reformer: Foundations course.

The Reformer is wonderfully adaptable and safe for a wide range of bodies, whether you’re new to movement or returning after time away. The introductory course ensures you’re familiar with the equipment and confident before joining group classes.

Your instructor will always offer options so you can work at a level that feels right for you.

The Reformer can feel unfamiliar at first, especially with a moving carriage and adjustable springs.

Our 6-week Foundations course teaches you how to use the machine safely, understand resistance, and move with control. It also allows us to see how your body moves so we can progress you confidently into Evolve, Release, or Advanced classes.

You’ll still get a great workout, it’s just delivered in a way that supports your long-term progression.

Matwork and Reformer complement each other beautifully.
Matwork builds core strength, control, and awareness using your bodyweight.
Reformer Pilates introduces adjustable spring resistance, helping you:

  • Challenge muscles through a full range of motion
  • Improve strength and endurance
  • Refine technique with feedback from the carriage
  • Activate deeper stabilising muscles

It’s a more varied, progressive way to build strength, especially for those who thrive with external resistance.

This is one of the biggest benefits for women.

Bone density naturally begins to decline from around age 30, and this process accelerates in perimenopause and menopause.

The Reformer’s springs create safe, controlled resistance, which stimulates bone growth and helps protect against long-term bone loss.

It’s a physiotherapy-backed way to:

  • Maintain strong, healthy bones
  • Improve balance (reducing fall risk)
  • Support joint health
  • Build full-body strength without impact

Reformer is one of the most effective low-impact resistance training tools for women at every stage of life.

Yes, very. Completing the Foundation course ensures you understand how to use the machine before joining the main timetable. In every class, your instructor will check your alignment, spring settings, and positioning, and offer modifications when needed. Our studio has six Reformers, allowing for personal guidance and plenty of space to move comfortably.

We recommend form-fitting, comfortable clothing.

This allows your instructor to clearly see your alignment so they can support you safely, and it prevents loose fabrics from catching on the moving carriage or pulleys.

Grip socks are essential, they improve stability, prevent slipping, and support hygiene. Pivot grip socks are available in-studio if needed.

We’re here to help.

If you’re experiencing pain or recovering from an injury, we recommend starting with a Physiotherapy Assessment.

This allows us to understand what your body needs, adapt your movement safely, and guide you toward the right class or a supportive 1:1 session before joining groups.

To keep everyone safe and to maintain consistency across our studio, we ask that all clients complete our Reformer: Foundations course or are signed off by one of our in-house instructors before joining our ongoing timetable.

Even if you’ve used a Reformer elsewhere, we know Pilates can be taught very differently depending on the studio, training school, and equipment. Our Foundations course ensures everyone begins with the same understanding of the machine, the springs, and the APPI-informed technique we use across all classes.

If you feel confident and competent on the Reformer already, you’re very welcome to book a 1:1 session, where we can assess your movement and sign you off for our Evolve, Release, or Advance classes from there. 😊
