Welcome to Reformer Pilates at Pivot Therapies

Reformer Pilates offers a dynamic, full-body workout using a specialised piece of equipment called the Reformer. The Reformer consists of a sliding carriage, springs, and pulleys that add resistance and challenge to traditional Pilates exercises. It’s designed to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination in a controlled and low-impact way.

At Pivot Therapies, we teach APPI Clinical Pilates on the Reformer, meaning our focus is always on precision and technique. Because of this, having a solid foundation in Matwork Pilates is essential before transitioning to the Reformer. The matwork prepares you for the complexity of Reformer movements, and without this base, jumping into a Reformer class can be overwhelming. That’s why we require all clients to complete our 6-week Introduction to Reformer course.

Why the Introduction Course is Essential

This course focuses less on Pilates technique and more on getting familiar with the Reformer machine—how to use it safely and build your confidence before joining our full timetable. By completing this course, you’ll be ready to dive straight into our regular classes without needing extra guidance on using the equipment. There’s nothing worse than feeling unprepared in a Reformer class, and we’re here to make sure you feel confident and capable.

Over six weeks, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills to use the Reformer safely and effectively. You’ll learn how to engage your core, control your movements, and work with the machine’s various elements. We recommend at least six weeks of Matwork experience before starting this course, as Matwork teaches many fundamental movements that transfer directly to the Reformer.

Those of you who’ve joined us for Matwork know it’s tough enough on a stable surface—now imagine adding a moving carriage, sprints, and foot loops into the mix! This course will help you build on that foundation and prepare you for everything the Reformer has to offer. If you’re new to Pilates but eager to learn, we’ll guide you step-by-step to help you get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reformer Pilates is open to anyone who has completed our Introduction to Reformer course. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or just getting into Pilates, the Reformer provides an adaptable challenge suitable for different fitness levels. However, having a matwork foundation is key to ensuring you can fully benefit from and enjoy the Reformer classes.

While Mat Pilates focuses on core strength and bodyweight resistance, the Reformer introduces external resistance with springs, which adds an extra level of intensity. It can also target muscles that might be harder to activate in Matwork, allowing for a more varied and challenging workout.

Absolutely. At Pivot Therapies, we prioritise your safety by ensuring that all clients go through our Introduction to Reformer course, which teaches the proper use of the equipment.
